Group Support Volunteers (GSV's)
Veterans Healing Veterans from the Inside Out seeks Group Support Volunteers for our trauma recovery programs. This may be inside or outside prison facilitation. Group Support Volunteers provide encouragement and support to incarcerated or formerly incarcerated veterans who are seeking recovery from the effects of military and life trauma. We run weekly peer support groups which are led by incarcerated or formerly incarcerated facilitators and staffed/supported by volunteers.
What GVSs Do
+ Attend weekly group meetings (2 hrs) for 12 – 18 months.
+ Participate as peers in a group process based on principles of narration therapy.
+ Model best practices in facilitation and group participation.
+ Uphold guiding principles of confidentiality and respect.
+ Regularly apprise Program Manager of group progress.
Qualifications
+ Significant experience in group process and peer support.
+ Commitment to establishing and maintaining a “safe container” to process traumatic experiences and a range of feelings.
+ Veteran status preferred, but not required.
All volunteers should be on their own recovery path having utilized resources available to those outside the confines of prison, thereby serving as both peers and role models on the trauma recovery path.
Throughout the program, participants develop a sense of safety, affording them the opportunity to explore their own behavioral patterns as they navigate the aftermath of their traumatic experiences. Group Support Volunteers must pass a basic security clearance to enter the prison.
